Phenalkamines

Cashew-derived epoxy curing chemistry for marine, protective, and industrial coating formulations.

Phenalkamine curing agents

Phenalkamines are Mannich-type epoxy curing agents derived from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). Their chemical structure combines an aromatic backbone, a long aliphatic side chain, and reactive amine functionality.

Phenalkamine benefits

This chemistry is commonly considered for protective coatings where cure speed, moisture tolerance, and adhesion are important. Actual performance depends on the selected curing agent, resin system, formulation, and application conditions.

High hydrophobicity

The long aliphatic side chain contributes hydrophobic character. In appropriately formulated systems, this can support water resistance and the protection of metal substrates. Product-specific corrosion and adhesion performance must be assessed through testing.

Fast and low-temperature cure

Phenalkamine chemistry is often selected for its reactivity at low temperatures. Cure time, working life, and application temperature limits are formulation-dependent and require grade-specific technical data.

Applications

Marine and protective coatings, industrial maintenance, concrete primers, and floor coatings are established areas of use for phenalkamine-based epoxy systems.
